DR MUHAMMAD AMJAD

Eye Surgeon

Children's Eye Care

Paediatric Eye Specialist in Rawalpindi

Dr. Muhammad Amjad — trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) London, one of only 3 surgeons in the UK who performed neonatal retinal surgery during his fellowship. Children's Eye & Retina Clinic at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi.

Why paediatric eye care is different

Children's eyes are not simply smaller adult eyes. The visual system is still developing throughout childhood — which means that untreated eye conditions in infancy and early childhood can permanently impair vision in ways that cannot be corrected later. Early detection and prompt treatment are critical.

Dr. Amjad trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) London — the UK's leading children's hospital — where he developed specialised skills in paediatric vitreoretinal surgery, including the complex techniques required to operate on premature neonates.

Conditions treated

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Abnormal retinal blood vessel growth in premature babies. Requires urgent screening and treatment. Dr. Amjad has extensive experience from his training at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Paediatric Retinal Detachment

Retinal detachment in children, including those associated with ROP, trauma, or inherited conditions. Requires specialised surgical techniques adapted for younger eyes.

Congenital Cataract

Clouding of the lens present at birth. Requires early surgical intervention to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye). Timing is critical — ideally in the first 6–8 weeks of life.

Vitreous Haemorrhage in Children

Bleeding into the vitreous from ROP, trauma, or other causes. Lens-sparing vitrectomy (endoscopic technique) may be used to avoid the need for contact with the lens.

Posterior Segment Abnormalities

Including persistent fetal vasculature, Coats disease, familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), retinoschisis, and other inherited retinal disorders.

ROP — the premature baby eye emergency

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is one of the most time-critical conditions in paediatric eye care. All premature babies born at less than 32 weeks or weighing less than 1,500 g must be screened for ROP. Stage 3 ROP with plus disease requires treatment within 72 hours to prevent retinal detachment.

If your baby was born prematurely and has not had a retinal examination, please contact the clinic urgently. Do not wait for a scheduled appointment.

ROP screening criteria: All babies born at <32 weeks gestation OR <1,500 g birthweight should be screened. Screening begins at 31 weeks corrected gestational age or 4 weeks postnatal age, whichever is later.

Frequently asked questions

What is ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity)?

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an eye disease affecting premature babies, in which abnormal blood vessels grow on the retina. Premature infants — especially those born before 31 weeks or weighing less than 1,500 g — are at highest risk. Without timely treatment, ROP can progress to retinal detachment and permanent blindness. All premature babies meeting screening criteria should have a dilated retinal examination by a specialist. Dr. Amjad was trained at Great Ormond Street Hospital and was one of only 3 surgeons in the UK performing neonatal retinal surgery.

How is ROP treated?

Mild ROP (stages 1–2) is monitored closely and often resolves on its own. Stage 3 or above with 'plus disease' (dilated, tortuous vessels) requires treatment within 72 hours. Treatment options include: laser photocoagulation to ablate peripheral avascular retina, intravitreal anti-VEGF injection (bevacizumab), or surgery (vitrectomy with lens-sparing technique) for advanced detachment. Dr. Amjad has extensive experience in all stages of ROP management.

What children's eye conditions does Dr. Amjad treat?

Dr. Muhammad Amjad sees children with: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), paediatric retinal detachment, congenital cataracts, posterior segment abnormalities, vitreous haemorrhage in children, and other surgical retinal conditions. He runs a dedicated children's eye and retina clinic at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital Rawalpindi.

What are the children's clinic hours at Al-Shifa Rawalpindi?

Dr. Amjad's children's eye clinic at Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi runs on: Monday 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM, Saturday 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Urgent ROP and paediatric cases can be arranged outside these hours — contact the clinic via WhatsApp on +92 327 850 6363.

At what age can children have eye surgery?

Eye surgery can be performed at any age when it is clinically necessary, including in neonates. Congenital cataracts are typically operated on in the first weeks of life to prevent amblyopia (lazy eye) from developing. ROP surgery may be needed in premature babies still in the neonatal unit. Dr. Amjad is experienced in operating on patients of all ages, from premature newborns to elderly adults.

My child was born prematurely — when should I have their eyes checked?

All premature babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation or weighing less than 1,500 g at birth should be screened for ROP. Screening typically begins at 31 weeks corrected gestational age (or 4 weeks after birth, whichever is later). If your premature baby has not yet been screened, contact Dr. Amjad's clinic immediately — delays can result in missed treatment windows.
