Intravitreal Injections in Rawalpindi & Islamabad

Avastin, Eylea, and Lucentis injections for macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusion. Performed by Dr. Muhammad Amjad at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital injection clinic, Rawalpindi.

What is an intravitreal injection?

An intravitreal injection delivers medication directly into the vitreous gel inside the eye. This allows the drug to reach the retina at a therapeutic concentration that oral or topical medications cannot achieve. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is performed in the clinic under sterile conditions.

The most common type of intravitreal injection is an anti-VEGF (anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) drug. These medicines block a protein that drives abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina — the underlying cause of vision loss in conditions like wet AMD and diabetic macular oedema.

Conditions treated with intravitreal injections

  • Wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD)
  • Diabetic macular oedema (DMO) — sugar ki aankh
  • Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  • Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO)
  • Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO)
  • Myopic choroidal neovascularisation
  • Refractory macular oedema (steroid injections)

Available drugs — Avastin, Eylea & Lucentis

Dr. Amjad uses a range of intravitreal agents. The choice of drug is based on your diagnosis, disease activity, frequency of required injections, and cost considerations — all discussed openly at your consultation.

Bevacizumab

Avastin

Most widely used anti-VEGF. Cost-effective. Used for AMD, diabetic macular oedema, RVO.

Aflibercept

Eylea®

Longer duration of action. May require fewer injections for sustained control of disease activity.

Ranibizumab

Lucentis®

First anti-VEGF licensed specifically for the eye. Monthly dosing. Used for AMD, DMO, and RVO.

Dexamethasone implant

Ozurdex®

Slow-release steroid. Used for retinal vein occlusion and refractory diabetic macular oedema.

Triamcinolone acetonide

Triesence®

Steroid injection used for macular oedema and intra-operative visualisation during vitrectomy.

What happens at the injection clinic?

  1. 1OCT scan and visual acuity test to assess current disease activity and your response to previous treatment.
  2. 2Anaesthetic drops applied to the eye — typically takes 5 minutes to take full effect.
  3. 3The eye surface is cleaned with antiseptic (povidone iodine) and a speculum holds the eyelids open.
  4. 4The injection is administered through the white of the eye (sclera), usually on the side away from the visual axis. Takes just 2–3 seconds.
  5. 5The eye is checked, and antibiotic drops are applied. You are free to go home immediately.

The total appointment time is typically 30–45 minutes. Most patients can drive home unless their vision was already significantly affected before treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What conditions are treated with intravitreal injections?

Intravitreal injections are used to treat: wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), diabetic macular oedema (sugar ki aankh), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion (branch or central), myopic choroidal neovascularisation, and other conditions causing abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina.

What is the difference between Avastin, Eylea, and Lucentis?

All three are anti-VEGF drugs that block abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina. Bevacizumab (Avastin) is the most widely used and cost-effective option. Aflibercept (Eylea) has a longer duration of action and may require fewer injections in some conditions. Ranibizumab (Lucentis) was the first anti-VEGF specifically approved for the eye. Dr. Amjad will advise which drug is most appropriate for your specific condition and circumstances.

Are intravitreal injections painful?

Anaesthetic drops are applied to the eye before the injection, so most patients feel little or no pain — typically just mild pressure. The injection itself takes only a few seconds. Some patients experience brief discomfort or a sense of pressure, but this passes quickly. You can go home immediately after.

How much do intravitreal injections cost in Rawalpindi and Islamabad?

Injection cost depends on the drug used — bevacizumab (Avastin), aflibercept (Eylea), and ranibizumab (Lucentis) differ in price. A written estimate covering the drug, procedure, and follow-up is provided at your consultation before treatment begins. Most patients need multiple injections over time; the maintenance schedule and its cost are planned openly with you. Message us on WhatsApp for a cost estimate before booking.

How many injections will I need?

Most conditions require an initial loading phase of 3 monthly injections, followed by a maintenance schedule based on how your eye responds. Some patients need injections every 4–8 weeks long-term; others achieve stable disease with less frequent treatment. Dr. Amjad monitors your progress with OCT imaging at each visit to guide treatment decisions.

What happens at the injection clinic appointment?

You will have an OCT scan and visual acuity test before the injection to assess your response to treatment. Anaesthetic drops are applied, the eye is cleaned with antiseptic, and the injection is given. The whole appointment typically takes 30–45 minutes including waiting time. The injection itself takes under 2 minutes. You can drive home in most cases.

Aankhon mein injection — kya yeh dardnaak hoti hai aur kitni baar lagni hai?

Aankhon mein intravitreal injection lagwane se pehle numbing drops lagate hain, isliye dard nahi hota — sirf halka sa pressure feel hota hai aur injection sirf 2–3 seconds mein hoti hai. Kitni baar injection lagni hai yeh aapki bimari par depend karta hai — aam tor par pehle 3 mahine mein monthly injection hoti hai, phir aankh ke response ke hisaab se schedule banta hai.
